Located a short drive west of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the pristine Gulf Coast community of Fort Morgan. With miles of expansive beachfront, this peninsula boasts several attractions that make it the perfect day trip for beachgoers, history buffs, and nature enthusiasts.

Tour the Fort Morgan Historic Site

Built between 1819 and 1833, Fort Morgan has played a significant role in several military conflicts during the United States’ history. Located at the tip of the peninsula, the historic fort is a great stop for history buffs and military enthusiasts. The site also regularly hosts events throughout the year including demonstrations and military tributes. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children; there is also a family admission option for $20.

Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge

Just a short drive east of the Fort Morgan historical site, the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge is a no-brainer for beachgoers and nature enthusiasts. This wildlife viewing and recreation area boasts a mix of micro-habitats that include migratory birds, endangered species, and protected dunes and plants. The refuge also has several hiking trails with terrific views. Entrance to the refuge is free.

Mobile Bay Ferry

The Mobile Bay Ferry transports passengers across Mobile Bay, linking between Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island, with stunning views in-between. There are two ferries, the Fort Morgan and the Marissa Mae Nicole that carries passengers back-and-forth across the bay. The ferry can also transport vehicles, saving travelers hours of driving time looking to pass through or visit Dauphin Island. Departure times are as early as 8:00 a.m. and as late as 7:15 p.m. Pedestrian tickets are $6 for adults and children ages 6 and under are free. Ticket prices for travelers with vehicles vary from $11 to $36.

What better way to take advantage of the seclusion and peacefulness of Fort Morgan than going to the beach? Visitors will find miles of emerald water and expansive beachfront along the peninsula, including the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Beach which is free to enter.

Battery Bowyer

Servicing the United States Army from 1898 to 1917, Battery Bowyer was a reinforced concrete coastal gun battery and is now part of the Fort Morgan State Park. The battery was operational during the Spanish-American War and World War 1.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab Estuarium

The Estuarium is a fantastic option for those rare rainy beach days or if you’re looking for some fun away from the sun. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab Estuarium highlights the key habitats of coastal Alabama and is home to over 100 local species. Kids will love the stingray touch pool and the Living Marsh Boardwalk at the Estuarium regularly holds educational talks with researchers, aquarists, and educators. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 5 through 18.

Fort Gaines

A key proponent during the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War, Fort Gaines has stood for over 150 years guarding the entrance of the scenic bay. A short ferry ride with the Mobile Bay Ferry will provide guests with terrific views of the historic military site located on Dauphin Island. Tours of the fort are offered with advanced notice.
